Do Something Charlotte!

Hi Beauts!

So in my unending quest to live a happy, healthy, productive life I have found that a lot of my peers ask how I avoid happy hours, beerfests, and late night throwdowns, and still have a social life. As I have gotten older those "good times" have become less appealing and I have found other interests that are not only entertaining but benefit the greater good of society. Spending your money and efforts in a way that helps bring hope to others while leaving you with a euphoric sense of worth is WAY better than spending time and money to pay your baristas rent leaving you with a massive headache from one too many Woo Woo Shots! This weekend in Charlotte there are many opportunities to get out there and DO SOMETHING inexpensive, clean, and fun!

For one, it's 1st Friday! All over the nation artists and gallerys celebrate the 1st weekend of every month by honoring featured artists with a gallery crawl of sorts! Where would you find such a thing in Charlotte?? Oh well, of course.. it would be in NoDa, Charlotte's Historic Arts District... admission is FREE and this week the Green Rice gallery is presenting creations by Jason Basden! He creates mixed media sculptures incorporating metal and mechanical findings. The street vendors of NoDa alone are worth taking a peak at, and I am always pretty intrigued by what Dialect and The Arthouse have on showcase!

Another idea to spend your Friday evening in the QC is attending an event where the proceeds benefit an organization in need. This weekend a couple of my friends are lending their talents and time and in part a few events have transpired - Beards BeCause began when two friends put forth a testosterone driven effort towards a feminine cause by raising money for a local battered women's shelter. Scott Doerr and Jared Yerg have raised thousands of dollars over the past 4 years for the United Family Services Shelter for Battered Women and have expanded their efforts to combat domestic violence to other cities, including Atlanta, Ga which kicks off their campaign this week as well! The fundraiser begins this weekend with the Clean Shaven Party on October 1st at 8 pm. The party will be held at Dilworth Neighborhood Grille and will have live music by Leadville Social Club and JT and the Dragpipes. There is at $10 donation at the door so come see what all the 'fuzz' is about ;)

Before you head to Dilworth Neighborhood Grille pop over to Blackfinn in the EpiCentre for another charitable event! Beginning at 5:30 pm this Friday the GALA Foundation is having it's first cocktail fundraiser to support the abused and neglected children of Mecklenburg County. As we all know the Charlotte Checkers are joining the AHL and tickets will be on sale for the opening game - $6 from those ticket purchases will go to the children as well as donations will be recieved all evening. Most importantly, a good friend of mine, Mike Bilfulco, will be playing live music at the event and that alone will be worth the trip!

Last but not least in the spirit of first fridays across the country, the Mint Museum opens Uptown this weekend! The Grand Opening event features 24 hours of festivities begining Friday evening at 5:00 pm for a ribbon cutting ceremony and includes tours of the new facility, films, an all night dance party (sponsored by our favorite gays of Takeover Friday), sunrise yoga, and a ton of hands on activities and demonstrations! $10 admission on Friday and open to the public on Saturday so pull an all nighter or pop over on Saturday and be a part of Art History at this groundbreaking event!

I hope you all are able to make it out and about on this cool October weekend! I personally can't wait to join the crowd and delve into what the city has to offer and what I can offer my city!

Loves,
LB!

Goodbye Sweet Summertime

Good Morning Fit and Fab,

I hope that you are all feeling refreshed at the thought of moving into a new season. At 11:09 pm last night we said goodbye to Summer and hello to Autumn as the Harvest Moon shone brightly over us. I personally am thrilled to be moving on from summertime romances, white jeans (that are impossible to keep clean), and the temptation to be lazy by the pool everyday. Although the weather still reflects a mid-August mug, the mornings are cooler, the days are shorter, and October is right around the corner. What does this mean: FALL FASHION!!!!! Boots, clogs, denim leggings, huge leather bags, animal prints, and soft textured pieces! I personally wear what is in season no matter what the weather is, so as I have been pulling out my suede peeptoe pumps, black skinnies, and snake-print Nation T's. I prepare to break a mild sweat for the sake of fashion, and keeping up with those Fit and Fab women of The Big City! I can barely stand to flip through a magazine and see all of my favorite celebs up-to-date with Fall fashion and then step out into 90 degree weather and still see colorful dresses and Jack Rogers on all of my fellow Charlotteans... Please do not take that as a diss if you are rocking this look.. it is more my disgruntled mood towards the weather.. because I can guarantee you are much more comfortable than me :)... transition between seasons is always hard, expecially in our semi-tropic state of NC, but beginning to work in some fall pieces can be easy. All colors of gray will be in this season so begin to work in light grays with black or navy. Begin to add in texture weather it be a suede open toe bootie, leather handbags, or a braided belt or headband and then accessorize with color to create a versatile look that is moving towards next seasons styles. Rich jewel tones will be in for Fall and still have the light, carefree feel of your summer wardrobe. So pair a rich navy dress with a mustard yellow pump and a crossbody distressed leather handbag or wear a casual LBD (little black dress) with a cobalt blue scarf in your hair and a gray suede shoe. Whether it be nixing a bright patterned springtime dresses or saving your flip flops for a drop-in Yoga class.. begin to tie in more structured pieces, still lightweight, but start to move away from your summer staples.

As I have been helping people clean out their closets and make their flawless transition into Fall, it has been important to have a try on session with favorite, seasonally appropriate, pieces and see what still fits, how to accessorize it differently, and modernize the look. Things to keep in mind: 1) If it is in bad condition, unrepairable, then GET RID OF IT! 2) Alter everything - make a pile of denim, dresses, even workout clothing and take it to a tailor. So simple but will clean up any look and makes those pieces useful again. 3) Separate your basic dresses from your specialty pieces and make an effort to wear these as much as your DVF's, Trina's, and Tibi's.. It is always easy to pull out a dress with a pattern and go but those patterns become recognizable and can easily make your look dated. If you accessorize your basic dresses with color and texture it will modernize and refresh your look, creating versatility and creativity into your wardrobe. If you have any questions or need help sorting through your options for Fall then please let me know. The task is much easier, and less overwhelming, if you have a little professional help ;)

Happy Cashmere Season Beauts!

Carb Control is the New Mind Control

Hi Beauts!

Happy Tuesday morning! In my past experiences with weightloss I have always found success when I am able to control my carbohydrate intake. I am not talking about the days of Dr. Atkin's quick fix diet, I mean knowing and understanding the difference between complex and simple carbs and the effect that these have on your brain and body. Complex carbs tend to be in natural foods and are like time-release capsules of sugar. The liver gradually breaks down these sugar molecules and your brain uses the glucose for fuel. Simple Carbs, on the other hand, are found in most processed or refined foods and break apart quickly during digestion, entering the bloodstream and spiking your blood sugar, giving you a surge of insulin. Too much sugar or refined carbohydrates at one time can actually deprive your brain of glucose - depleting its energy supply and compromising your brain's power to concentrate, remember, and learn. Bloodsugar spikes have also been linked to an increased risk for diabetes, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and obesity.

Coupling healthy carbs with protein is a good way to manage your bloodsugar levels. Protein helps to blunt the absorption of carbohydrates into your bloodstream keeping your bloodsugar in control and serving as a balanced diet. Eating natural carbs such as oatmeal, whole grains, or fruit earlier in the day will also aid in a healthier diet as your body has time to use the energy throughout the day and not convert the excess into fat as it goes unused. Lean proteins - fish and chicken - and non-starchy vegetables - broccoli and spinach, for dinner will leave you feeling satisfied and you will really feel the difference in the mornings! Carbs can leave you with a "moon face" in the am if eaten too late.

I hope that this information will help you to make healthy choices with your diet this week! Avoid the despondent feeling that carb overload can leave you with and freshen up your diet with vegetables and other whole foods! No brain drain for the fit and fab!! Have a great day gals!

LB

A Week in the Life of LB!

These days I have discovered the path to enlightenment! I have been bopping around town to the beat of my own drum. Free as a bird, happy as a clam, broke as MC Hammer... Well.. Not all of the above is accurate but I have been on a fresh new path and am feeling so liberated! As I am trying to break out on my own and explore new ventures, I have been a mad woman trying to fit it all in.

I have discovered that Summer is a tough time to stay fit and fab so I packed on a few lbs, I am not talking about more Lizzies and her Bananas, no, the real thing.. LBs.. So I am cleaning up my diet, my fitness regimen, and my life! I am eating a low calorie, but manageable, diet of whole foods, lean proteins, healthy fats, and energizing carbs. So far i am feeling the effects and am very pleased with my results. I would love to help you get back on your path to a healthy lifestyle, it is sooo rewarding!

As far as physical exercise is concerned, I can never get enough! It's my addiction, hell of a lot better than some, I feel the endorphines buzzing and the sweat dripping and I am in my zone.. Whether it be a Hot 26 Yoga class with Grace Morales, a "Kick Your Asana" Power Yoga class with Joey Barnes, or a Kettlebell workout - known as the EFP (Elite Fitness Protocol) or KHBK (KettleHell BootKamp) - with Cyrus Peterson at Advanced Training Concepts (ATC) I am in it to win it! I am lucky to have amazing teachers and mentors who are the best of the best, and Charlotte is lucky to have such pioneers in this City! As I am becoming a teacher of both arts, Yoga and Kettlebell training, I will forever be a student, learning technique, languaging cues, core principles, and form from all of the Greats, I am able to share that with my students only enhancing their personal experience in class. I am currently teaching a beginnner's Kettlebell class called KettleKore at ATC and Yoga classes from my "home" studio. My schedule is as follows:

KettleKore:
Tuesdays, Thursdays: 6:30- 7:15 am
Saturdays: 8:00 - 8:45 am

Yoga:
Tuesdays: 5:30 - 6:30 pm
Thursdays: 3:00 - 4:00 pm

Please email me at elizabethupchurch@gmail.com for more information about Kettlekore, Yoga, or private lessons.

On top of everything, I am also working with my very 1st client to reorganize her closet and so far it has been very successful. Tomorrow is day 3 and we have already accomplished way more than we had thought! She has removed the clutter, given back to her community, and designed an impeccable Fall wardrobe around clothes that she already had.. We picked up a few new items on Wednesday's shopping spree but we won't tell her hubby about those ;)

Life is about feeling good about yourself. trying something new, eating healthier, and organizing your life are sure-fire ways to bring you inner peace and provide a stress free environment. Friday is finally here... get out there, get active, and feel good about the choices that you will make today! Its a new day Gals... you know I am here for your support whenever you need it!

Loves to you all,
LB

Je t'aime, Amelie's French Bakery

Good Morning Prettys,

NoDa is a neighborhood in Charlotte that has always intrigued me. Noda, short for North Davidson, is Charlotte's historic arts district located just 2 miles North of Uptown. As Soho's little sister, Noda is the ideal setting for live music, gallery crawls, 24 hour coffee houses, and some of the best restaurants in town! Many of you have made the trip to Cabo Fish Taco for high gravity beers and the best blackened Mahi tacos you have ever tasted. The Neighborhood Theater has proven to be a great venue for up and coming artists as well as noodle-worthy favorites from our younger days. I made the trip one eve with the Cole-Holderfields to see Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band and the experience was...... colorful?!

I made the trip this morning to NoDa to check out Amelie's French Bakery. I have heard amazing things about the cozy cafe that is open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Serving soups, sandwiches, and of course, French pastries around the clock. Upon walking in the cafe this morning, you can see the detail that has been applied to this, quite large, bakery. The walls are Robin's egg blue, with overstuffed Victorian inspired furniture scattered about the multi-room space, toile lamps and curtains, Eiffel Tower accessories, a Mona Lisa print with vintage Ray Ban shades stuck to her face :), intricate chandeliers with origami swans dangling from them continue to characterize the Je ne sais quoi of the bakery. Large glass top community tables with sets of King Louis chairs surrounding, labeled on the back with titles like Court Jester and "Bill". a huge vintage black and white map of Noda is on one wall, painted above saying "You are here... sort of" Hipsters, students, yogis, young (and old) professionals prop themselves up in the high-back chairs with computer and espresso at arms length, Amelie's is truly a place to network, meet, sip, and eat, anytime of the day. You can never be lonely in Charlotte knowing that this homage to French culture exists just a few miles away from you! This is the perfect place to get some work done, network, or just enjoy the company of strangers (or friends).
Check out the website:

LB will be back NoDa this Friday at Dolce Vita Wine Bar to see Andrew Carpenter and Christian Skilone's band Dimestore Saints play. Hope to see you guys there!

What's Going On?

Hi Beautifuls! Happy Monday morning! I sit here still reeling from the events that have transpired over past 10 days, I am so excited to see my visions lining up!!!! I am blasting the 4 Non Blondes - What's Going On song in my earbuds at Sbucks and feel that that is a legitimate question for the day... What in the H-bomb is going ON?? Well.. in the world of Lizzie Bananas, we are busy busy.. Thanks to the beautiful girls at Lululemon Showroom I have a workshop coming up on Tuesday, September 28th to show all of you Fit and Fabulous ladies what we can do together to get your life in order! From advice on a detoxifying diet, to ridding your closet of the old and unused, to a cleansing yoga session we will cover it all; Mind, body, and CLOSET! I will keep you posted on the complimentary event but keep your eye out for postings on Lululemon Athletica Charlotte's FB page as well as The Fit Fashion Review FB page!

This weekend was a HUGE weekend in fashion and music and I hope that you all were able to tune in to some of these exciting events! The VMA's were huge last night with Lady Gaga racking up 8 awards including the Video of the Year for Bad Romance! - Don't be jealous but LB will be with the Gags next Sunday in Raleigh for her big show at the RBC center, I will definitely blog about my experience at a live performance of Gaga's! Florence and the Machine delivered an inspiring performance of Dog Days and Taylor Swift blew me away with her mature and elegant display of perfection!

NYC's Fashion Night Out 2010 came to a close on September 10th and was truly inspiring for the Fall season! For some of us money savvy, Fit and Fabulous girls, the first place I would check out for Fall fashion is Madewell!! Alexa Chung designed a collection for Madewell that dropped this past Saturday in stores. The line is made up of cool printed T's, layering pieces, peacoat inspired jackets, stripes, and feminine dresses. This will surely sell out so pop into your closest Madewell and check her out!

Well Dolls, Thanks for tuning in as always! I will be writing more frequently to keep you updated on Yoga classes, Kettlebell classes, and events that I will be hosting!!

California Dreamin'

B-E-A-UTIFULs!!! If you aren't OB-sessed already with Katy Perry and her new CD, Teenage Dream, well then it is time to pick up a copy of the COTTON CANDY scented, yes, the CD smells like the strawberry shortcake dolls of our younger years, and start jamming! If you are tired of California Girls then that is certainly understandable but do NOT let it deter you from listening to every other song on this CD because it is so good and the perfect mix to say goodbye to the boys of summer. The CD kicks off with Teenage Dream, which for me breaks my heart right now but is still a favorite amongst the fit and fab. #2..... OMG it is Katy's best on the CD! The Song is called T.G.I.F. and is a fun, going out song, that breaks off into an electric sax rendition at the end that makes you want to kick up your feet like you are at The Max with Slater and Lisa Turtle! Following that, comes Cali Girls, then Peacock and Firework which are the next 2 songs to be released to your local DJ's. Circle the Drain has caused quite a stir for KP as it is a song that she wrote taking some major digs at Travie McCoy, her ex, about his inadequacies in bed, pill popping antics, and childish ways! It's awesome and definitely shows a rock and roll side of our girl. My favorite song on the entire CD is The One That Got Away.. when she says "I was June and you were my Johnny Cash, never one with out the other, we made a pact.. Sometimes when I miss you I put those records on... Ughh it kills my little black heart but is SUCH a great song! Anyway, I won't spoil the rest but there are 5 more tracks that will melt your popsicle as well as 2 hidden tracks .. which I won't spoil BUT I will say that Passion Pit is behind the remix's. I hope you all are able to pick up this gem and enjoy it as I have with my KettleKore girls, on roadtrips to the beach, and cruising for boys with Lo.... Speaking of.. Lori's favorite is E.T. so definitely give that one a listen ;) - "Infect me with your loving, fill me with your poison!" Thanks for reading Dolls! I will be in touch soon with anything and everything fit and fab!

xoxo,
LB

Hi Beauts! Lizzie Bananas is back. I went on a little hiatus and am starting fresh today! I am excited to tell you all that I am going in a new and exciting direction with my career and lifestyle! As we all do, I lost sight of a few things during a very hectic time in my life and am ready to settle down and focus on what is important.. Likeee...
